Created For Convenience

If you haven’t already guessed, I get most of my information auditorily or visually. I’m not much of a reader.

I came across…well I don’t know what you’d call her. Maybe a parental expert? Anyway, they were talking about our convince bias.

Easier and much quicker to dress your child yourself but it robs them independence and skill development.
Easier to let them do and have, whatever they want, when they want, but then you raise an entitled brat.

We know that giving up our convivence bias is worth it. Long term.

Just like the uncomfortable and hard hour in the gym a day. Inconvenient but somehow worth it.

Another parallel they discussed was managing expectations.

We all know and understand the process of teaching a baby to swim. It takes time, money and patience. We don’t yell at our kids when they’ve forgotten to close their mouth whilst diving for the sinkies. We don’t throw them in the pool on day one and get frustrated when they start drowning.
They were using this example to explain how new skills are hard to learn and take time. Shoelaces, getting dressed, eating. Learn to approach each one with the same mindset.
As adults tackling the skill of health, we need to understand that it is as equally hard and frustrating. It is a skill & it takes time to learn.
Yet what do many of us do? Jump into the pool on day one expecting to swim!
Buying the joggers and going for a run, eating like a bodybuilder, trying to lose 10kgs in a month.

Frustrated when we inevitably start ‘drowning’.

Manage expectations. You’re a baby learning how to swim. Be patient kind and understanding to yourself. Failure is part of the process. Dry yourself off and try again.
