Ozempic/Mounjaro are undeniably effective for weight loss and blood sugar control.
They powerfully mimic your body’s natural gut hormones that regulate hunger, fullness, digestion, and metabolism.
In theory, we should just be able to eat until we’re naturally satisfied and stop. Our bodies have built in systems to say ‘enough’ i.e. when we’ve had the right amount energy.
For most of human history, that system worked pretty well.
So what gives?
Stop it. It’s not you.
Don’t beat yourself up – for God’s sake it’s an industry pushing a $100 billion /year. This is much bigger than a ‘you’ problem.
Well in simplistic terms, the systems that have worked so well in the past have been ‘hijacked’
-
It’s hard to feel satisfied when eating foods engineered to be ridiculously rewarding.
-
The weight creeps. Causing yet another broken signal. The hormone responsible for saying “I’m full” starts to get ignored. Kind of the like the boy who cried “wolf!”
-
High sugar/fat combos swing blood sugar big time, hunger comes knocking sooner.
-
Today’s demands are very different.
-
24/7 availability of food
-
constant food advertising
-
calorie density of ‘engineered’ foods (think perfect combo of sugar + fat + salt + refined carbs+ low fiber so you don’t get full).
-
Emulsifiers, additives, and preservatives. Longer term damage to our microbiome – leading to more signaling issues.
-
ease. Think drive-throughs, Uber Eats, takeaways, and ready to eat packaged foods. Hundreds of extra calories with barely any effort.
-
less community connections
-
stress
-
screens and distractions
-
computers. labour in most cases, is no longer physical
-
With all this in mind, it’s easy to feel powerless or angry.
Profits over health.
When it comes to nutrition stick to the K.I.S.S principle.
Nothing new here with this advice:
Prevention over cure.
Simply do your best to shift away from the ‘hijackers’. How?
Avoid/manage:
-
processed foods
-
screen time
-
sedentary lifestyle
-
stress
-
sleep
-
connection
The medications can be incredibly helpful for many people. As no surprise to you, they work best when paired with the basics that have always mattered.
The problem is that this is far easier said than done!
