I’ve had plenty of injuries over the years, they all suck.
I often have moments where I am feeling sorry for myself. Thinking “Imagine where I’d be if I’d never had any injuries”.
No time off or avoidance of certain movements I’ve worked so hard to improve.
No pulling back.
No starting from scratch.
I look at teenagers now training how I used to – HEAVY.
Whilst I’m impressed with how strong they are, I cringe as I literally feel the cry from my joints/tendons as I watch on.
Don’t get me wrong I still love training heavy when my body allows.
On the other hand, it’s made me a better coach. I know the pain; I know the frustrations and in many cases, I can pass on what helped me get through it.
I can see people performing movements in ways that I used to – seeing what’s likely ahead, & can encourage a change.
The problem is, if you’re perfectly fine, injury free, going about your business you have no buy in.
Your coach suggests you do xyz – the new way feels uncomfortable, awkward, and even weak!
Why then would you commit to it? Because they said so? Nah, this isn’t enough.
So, you revert back to what you felt was working ‘better’
I’m just as guilty of this. Only when the pain builds, interrupts my ability to train the way I’d like am I forced to change.
Here’s my suggestion – I’m trying to listen here too btw.
At this point, you might be able to reduce the pain down to a manageable level relatively quickly. Allowing you to return to whatever it was you were doing.
This is great, but.
And it’s a big BUT.
You need to then keep up with the exercises and techniques that helped reduce that pain!
Correct the underlying issue once and for all.
This is MUCH easier said than done. Like I said I’m trying to listen to my own advice here.
As much as I hate Injuries – maybe pain is the only way we will listen?
